Trip Update!

An update on what is happening at the school!

Trip Alert
There are ten of us who will be going to the school June 13-25 and what a wonderful array of folks!  Ruby Stanfield and her daughter Vanessa will be joining us.  Ruby went three years ago with her daughter Brianna who had raised money for the chicken farm as part of her achieving gold status in the Girls Scouts.  Vanessa is now "going for the gold" and is collecting musical instruments so we can have a band!  Let us know if you have any musical instruments at home "collecting dust".  We will gladly take them!

Joanna Howe, who went with us last summer, is re-joining us along with her mother, Laura, and younger sister, Leigh.  Leigh is at St. John Vianney in Holmdel and the school is doing a clothing drive (which helps us make money), raising money for chickens (which helps the children get more protein) and they are collecting sunglasses.  Laura got all the mardi gras beads donated!!

Beth Almerini (a nurse) and her son Joseph are coming as well.   Lastly, my children-Tony and Michele Costa-and, of course, me!  If you read the last newsletter you will know it will be an AMAZING trip with Ugandapallooza, cleaning the town, having a parade and a birthday party for the orphans!

Just a heads up ... the Christmas party trip will be November 14-22 ... let me know if you will be joining us.  Already have five people who are planning on coming!

St. John Vianney
Victoria Nesser, a student at SJV, cut out little paper chickens, sold them for $2 each and raised over $150!  And, she is doing it again!  We ALWAYS need chickens ... they don't live forever!  :)

Jocelyn Bragg and Kris Costi recently held a bake sale at SJV and raised $180.  They then went to the Dollar Store and bought $180 worth of stickers!  This will be a special time for the children at the Mbiriizi School ... they LOVE stickers!

Special thanks to John J. Niesz, Assistant Principal at SJV and two unbelievable teachers ... Lisa Lenn and Nancy Csurbak ... they are SO supportive and so wonderful.

Hope for the City
We have almost everything we need to furnish the clinic.  Hope for the City is providing all the medical equipment and supplies as well as furnishing the two bedroom apartment that is part of the clinic.  I am driving a van out there this week and delivering 15 large plastic bins of medical and dental supplies that have been donated.  They have been stored in Michele's room and this is a great opportunity to get it all over there.  It looks like the 40 cu. foot shipping container will be sent starting in June (should arrive about three months later).

And, speaking of the Hynes family clinic, we will receive the rest of the money to complete the clinic in June.  Thank you, Hynes family, from the bottom of our hearts.

Child Sponsorship
We now have 250 orphans at the school in grades baby class, top class and P-1 to P-7 and 68 who are in secondary school (S-1 to S-6).  I hope you can find it in your heart to sponsor a child ... in the primary school it is only $1.00 a day and in secondary school it is $1.50 a day.  Please help us make a difference in these children's lives by taking them out of poverty.  These payments cover food, lodging, clothing, education and health care.

And, here is great news and how powerful sponsorship of our orphans can be:

Five of our students have now graduated from S-4
John Francis ... who was a teacher and is now going to college

2013
Timothy Nsereko ... Information technology
Stephen Muwanguzi ... Teacher
Reachel Namirembe ... Teacher
Sharifah Namaleme ... Nurse

Total cost for all four to get this education is only $4,900 USD

Jersey Shore Medical Center
I had the pleasure of meeting 20+ residents in the pediatric division of JSMC on Friday and what a joy to see so many wonderful doctors who have zeal and enthusiasm for caring for children.  And, if I am lucky, we will have some join us on the medical trip next March!  Thanks, Dr. Gilbert, for the complete list of what they can expect to encounter.  I think they were a little surprised!

Christmas In July
Last but not least ... it is time to start planning our  Christmas party!  We need donations so we can buy every girl a new dress and every boy a new shirt.  Please feel free to mail a check, go to our website and pay through PayPal or give us a call!

Thank you ALL for your wonderful support of Sylvia's Children.
With your help we are making a difference!
